Emerging Artist

Joyce Leggett is an African American self-taught artist from Excel, Alabama, now residing in Pensacola, Florida. Her journey has been one of grit and desire. As a child, she was unable to take art classes. Nonetheless, Joyce still won first place in an art contest when she was eight. This early success was the impetus needed to affirm her talent. She has now come full circle, guiding and encouraging elementary school children as an art instructor.

Her recent work reflects her love of music—Joyce is also a singer. Realistic representations of a single or multiple instruments are portrayed against blended backgrounds. The harmonies of colors using textural layers of oil or acrylic paint create a visual backdrop that enhances the beauty of each object. 

Joyce’s artwork has been featured in local exhibitions and recently at the Pensacola Museum of Art.
